Abstract:
Ring-opening reactions of epoxide have long been used to produce a wide range of organic molecules.
There has been an intensive development of catalysts for the ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of
epoxides and cyclic anhydrides to afford aliphatic polyesters using a binary catalyst system of chromium-
salen complex and bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium chloride (PPNC1). However, this catalyst has not been
explored in the ring-opening reactions of epoxides with acyclic anhydrides to produce diesters that have
potential applications as fungicides and green solvents. In this research, the chromium-salen complex/PPNCI
binary system was investigated for the simple one-pot catalytic synthesis of diesters using cyclohexene oxide
and butyric anhydride as the model reaction. The reaction proceeded to full conversion within 40 min under
solvent-free conditions at 100 'C. The catalyst system was further applied to other epoxide and acyclic
anhydride combinations to obtain a variety of diesters in high yield which can be isolated easily via vacuum
distillation
