A Phonological Study of Southern Burmese Language Spoken in Mon State of Myanmar
Abstract:
This thesis was entitled A Phonological Study of Southern Burmese Language Spoken in Mon State of Myanmar. The objectives of this study were1) to study the Phonemes of Southern Burmese language spoken and 2) to analyze the consonants, vowels and tones of Southern Burmese language spoken in Mon state of Myanmar.
The research method for study employed a qualitative research in order to a phonological study of Southern Burmese language spoken in the area of Kya Khat Kon village, in Mon State of Myanmar. The population and sample of the study were 10 villagers from Kya Khat Kon village of Kyaikmayaw township in Mon state of Myanmar and researcher selected four villagers among them for this research.
The research tools were used books, informants, journals, and theses. The data used in this study was collected at kya khat kon village, kyaikmaraw township, mon state of Myanmar from the speeches of Burmese native speaker and the data analyses were Phonological word, syllable, phoneme, and assimilation.

In the Burmese language, it is generally agreed that there are approximately 45 sounds as 33 consonants and 12 basic vowels. The consonant phonemes comprise 33 consonants: /p, ph, b, ŧ, đ, t, th, d, k, kh, g, s, sh, z, ɕ, h, c, ch, j, m, hm, n, hn, ɲ, hɲ, ŋ, hŋ, w, hw, y, l, hl, r/ and the vowel phonemes are a, ā, i, ī, u, ū, e, ai, o, ō, aṃ, a: There are four tones: /1, 2, 3, 4/, or high falling, mid falling, mid high, and high abrupt, respectively.
