A Syntactic Study of Burmese Clauses Used in Mandalay of Myanmar

Abstract: Objectives of the study included 1) studying the clause structures of Burmese language used in Mandalay of Myanmar and 2) to analyze the clause structures of Burmese language used in Mandalay of Myanmar. The study was qualitative. A content analysis was used for analyzing data. This thesis is a study of the syntax of clauses in spoken Mandalay Burmese, the standard language. The approach of the study was based on the tagmemic theory initiated by Kenneth L. Pike. The clauses shown in the thesis are derived from not less than ten conversations and ten narratives, in addition to other clauses elicited from informants. This study found that speaks colloquial Burma in many ways by changing places and using many words, both in phrase and clause. The structure of the main clause in Burmese was subject-object-verb. The verb was placed at the end of the clause and followed by a verb suffix. Can alter the subject and object; besides, eight peripheries were modifying main clauses. They were location, temporal, manner, instruments, beneficiary, accompanying recipients, and final particle. Main verbs can classify 10 Burmese clauses. They were transitive clause the subject and the object can switch their places by using the thing after the object, intransitive clause subject was filled by a noun phrase and supplied by an intransitive verb, bitansitive clause; subject and the indirect object were served by a noun phrase, descriptive clause: the issue was filled by a noun phrase, and the predicate filled by a descriptive verb phrase, equation clause: Item and Item2 supplied by a noun phrase, and the predicate is filled by equational verb phrase, motion clause: main verb filled by a motional verb and verb position filled by a directional verb, the subject , ambient clause : issue was filled by a noun phrase, and predicate was supplied by an ambient verb phrase, quotative clause subject and object were served by a noun phrase and an obligatory conjunction, existential clause: that subject and complement filled by a noun phrase, predicate was supplied by an existential verb phrase and propulsion clause: subject and object filled by a noun phrase and predicate filled by a propulsion verb phrase. The modifiers put before the main verbs are adverbs and negative words. The modifier was placed after the main verb is a motional verb or a directional verb, auxiliaries (i.e., mood and aspect), polite particle marker (pasteurizing and future) The language we are learning, knowing the nature of the construction of the sentence structure of our native language makes it more effective in studying another language. The aim of this study, the order of the elements is different in the two languages, especially the position of the verb. In the Myanmar language, the verb is always the last element of the clause. Finally, the result of the studies about syntactic structure showed how were used the different Burmese languages. It is to help the readers to understand the constructions of a clause in standard Burmese.
