Battery sizing for electric public transportation based on real driving patterns in Rayong
Abstract:
The rising gas price and low oil production, coupled with a desire to reduce
pollution from commuting and transportation, have further pushed electric vehicles
(EVs) into an increasingly popular alternative to their internal combustion engine
counterpart. However, range anxiety is still an issue plaguing the application of electric
vehicles. Determining the size and power of the energy storage is one of the main design
challenges for electric vehicles. Reliable and accurate information on the typical usage
of the vehicle of interest would be a great source to indicate power requirements and
cost-effective design. However, energy consumption usually depends on several factors
such as traffic conditions, driving cycle, velocities, road topology, etc. This paper
presented the energy consumption analysis of electric public fleet in Rayong province.
Daily operating data from six public-serviced vehicles; four diesel medium-duty trucks,
and two diesel pick-up trucks, were collected. The real driving cycle was obtained via
an on-board measurement method. A data logging equipment (RACELOGIC VBOX
VB2SX10) was employed to collect velocity, latitude, longitude, time, and height
during the daily operation of the studied vehicles. A Microtrips method was then used
to construct representative driving cycles. The most representative newly constructed
driving cycle from each route was used to calculate energy consumption via
MATLAB/Simulink. The normalized energy consumption rate result of diesel mediumduty
truck and diesel pick-up truck are 0.068 kWh/ton·km and 0.0771 kWh/ton·km.
