Abstract:
This research aimed to 1) study the concept of creating Phra Singh pattern, 2) develop contemporary Buddhist sculptures in the form of Phra Singh, and 3) create a learning process with society towards the Phra Singh 4 Buddha image. This research is action research with research and development process (R&D).
The result showed that Phra Singh or Chiang Saen Buddhist image were considered as clear and high artistic value. It is the first sculpture created by Thai craftsmen in Suvarnabhumi area or civilized area around 16th Buddhist century. These sculptures appeared in various districts in the north of Thailand and the prominent sculpture is located in Chiang Saen. Materials used to create sculptures including stucco, various precious metals, and pure gold. Therefore, Phra Singh was considered as it is the origin of Lanna art. The pattern of a contemporary Buddhist sculptor in the form of Phra Singh 4 was walking Buddha image with 19 inches casted with bronze. The idea of creating this form of Buddha image was from the arts in Chiang Saen period extending the influence of Buddhist arts to the neighboring kingdom and the standing Buddha image was created. Moreover, the need of creating Buddha sculptures in the contemporary era of northern craftsmen influenced the Buddha sculptures in nowadays. In addition, a learning process was created through activities based on the creative process in creating innovative contemporary art and the learning process with society towards Phra Singh 4 including 1) Group discussion, 2) Knowledge transfer through teaching, and 3) Organizing the exhibition.
