An Experimental Study on T-G Teaching in Chinese Teaching for Junior Children in Thailand: A Case Study of Phaya Mengrai Kindergarten
Abstract:
This study aimed to design T-G teaching method for young Thai children to learn Chinese. The validity of T-G teaching method was experimented through One Group Pretest-Posttest Design in order to examine the efficiency of T-G teaching method in Chinese teaching. The samples were 28 students from Class 2 of Phaya Mengrai Kindergarten in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Mean (x̄) and standard deviation (S.D.) were calculated for statistical analysis. The results showed that:
1. The combination of childrens psychological cognition and development, task-based teaching method, game teaching method and related theories were integrated to design T-G teaching method suitable for young Thai children.
2. The experimental results showed that T-G teaching method was effective. The author implemented T-G teaching method with the Chinese classroom. The students were allowed to experience their learning in a planned and step-by-step process, overcome difficulties in the teaching task, and finally deploy T-G teaching method throughout the Chinese teaching session. The process efficiency (E1) was 88.57 while experimental results efficiency (E2) was 87.29. The efficiency scores (E1/E2) of T-G teaching method were thus greater than the 80/80 standard criteria which indicated that T-G teaching method was efficient for Chinese teaching.
3. Students Posttest scores were higher than their pre-test. The pre- and posttest mean scores of 28 students in the experiment was 38.00 and 43.64, the standard deviations of the pre- and posttest were 6.01 and 2.74, the t-test was -5.114, and the P value was 0.002 (P <0.05). The test results were thus significant and the experimental students scores were then significantly different from those of the pre- and posttest.
