Marker and IMU-based registration for mobile augmented reality
Abstract:
Most mobile augmented reality (AR) use cases are limited to indoor environments. Traditional mobile AR uses an image marker to overlay virtual objects with real objects. Newly introduced mobile AR frameworks, such as ARKit and ARCore, enhance mobile AR capability to perform in room-scale environments thanks to integration of an inertial measurement unit (IMU). Despite this, overlaying virtual and real objects in a huge range of working areas, such as an outdoor environment, is still a challenge. In this study, a novel AR registration mechanism which combines image markers and IMU tracking, is proposed for using mobile AR in outdoor environments. As a result, mobile devices compatible with ARKit can operate registration in outdoor environments without any additional tools other than an image marker. The registration mechanism developed elevates mobile AR experiences for use with large-scale objects such as buildings or outdoor landscapes
