Abstract:
This research focused on the synthesizing and modifying imidazolium- based on ionic liquids ( ILs) with functional groups as an auxiliary agent in chitosan depolymerization. Five synthesized ILs ( 1- butyl- 3-
methylimidazolium chloride, as [BMIM]Cl, 1-(3-carboxypropyl)-3-methylimidazolium chloride, as [BMIMCOOH]Cl, 1-(4-sulfobutyl)-3-methylimidazolium chloride, as [C4H8SO3HMIM]Cl, 1-(3-carboxypropyl)-3-methylimidazolium
hydrogen sulfate, as [ BMIMCOOH] HSO4, and 1- ( 4- sulfobutyl) -3- methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate as
[C4H8SO3HMIM]HSO4) were characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDITOF
MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR). The chitosan depolymerization which dissolved by 1 wt.% of acetic acid solution and further cracking in ionic liquids at room temperature. Interestingly, the effects of
functional groups and anions ( Cl- , HSO4
-) of imidazolium- based ionic liquids resulted in different degree of chitosan
depolymerization. Using suitable acid ionic liquids (AILs) as auxiliary agents at room temperature for 3 hours could
provide selective small molecular weight chitosan products. Furthermore, the recovery percentage of IL reaches 95.4%
that can be reusable
