The study of the effectiveness of English training course in enhancing English intelligibility of registrar office personnel
Abstract:
The objectives of this study were 1) to develop English for Registrar Office Personnel (EROP) for the registrar office personnel (ROP) of a university based on needs analysis, 2) to examine English intelligibility of the ROP from EROP, and 3) to investigate opinions of the ROP towards EROP. Research design of this study was divided into three stages including the needs analysis, the development of EROP, the implementation of EROP, and the evaluation of the effectiveness of the training course with the regard of the capability of English intelligibility of the ROP and the opinions of the ROP towards the training course. Instrument used for the first stage was needs analysis comprising of the ROPs questionnaire, semi-structured interview, speaking diagnostic test, and on-site observation. The results from needs analysis were used to design a specific course of EROP based on the principles of course development, which was considered as treatment instrument. The last stage was the implementation of and evaluation of EROP. Data collection instruments which were used to examine the effectiveness of EROP were performance tests and a questionnaire on the ROPs opinions towards EROP. The data obtained were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively based on the instruments used. Quantitative data collected from the ROP questionnaire, speaking diagnostic test, performance test, and opinion questionnaire were analyzed by the SPSS program. Theme analysis was used for qualitative data collected from semi-structured interview and on-site observation.
With regard to the findings from needs analysis, it showed that listening and speaking skills were necessary skills for the ROP. The lack of vocabulary knowledge, certain expressions used for common or predictable enquires, basic sentence structures, and awareness of appropriate discourse structures and pragmatic knowledge were evident to be focused for EROP. The findings regarding the effectiveness of EROP can be revealed based on the two dependent variables English intelligibility of the ROP and opinions of the ROP towards EROP. First, the results from performance test of role-plays and oral discourse completion test showed that the ROPs speaking ability could meet the expectations of mutual intelligibility in English for some degree. Second, the ROP had opinions toward the training course for the overall with a degree of Agree. Opinions towards learning objectives and unit content were perceived in a degree of Strongly Agree while components of language use, materials and activities, training time, evaluation, and others were perceived in a degree of Agree.
