Development of a wearable device for relieving the lower leg muscles fatigue
Abstract:
Standing is considered one of the most practical working postures since our limbs have the greatest
range of motion. Standing yields plenty of benefits, however, prolonged standing could lead not only to
discomfort but also to musculoskeletal disorders. This study aims to develop a device that could help relieve
muscle fatigue caused by prolonged standing. Also presented in this paper is the preliminary study, which
includes the basics of fatigue, the consequence of prolonged standing, and a review of the existing interventions
to cope with muscle fatigue. The acquired knowledge was used in designing the proposed wearable device.
The main design concept is to increase blood circulation in the lower leg muscles. Accordingly, massage rollers
and a compression system were employed. This paper contains the results of a preliminary experiment held
on one subject. The physical fatigue was evaluated through surface Electromyography (sEMG), whereas the
psychological fatigue was assessed through a questionnaire survey.
This study confirms the competence of the fatigue alleviating methods. The device can promote
comfort and increase the capable amount of time in the prolonged standing task. However, the device should
be improved by reducing its weight and size in the future. Further investigation on the muscle fatigue
assessment methods, as well as a study on specifications and patterns of the treatment method, is highly
recommended. Moreover, the device developed in this study can be modified and applied to other fatigued
muscles, such as the muscles in the upper limb or the quadriceps
