The effect of jigsaw technique on improving upper secondary school (tenth grade) Thai students reading comprehension
Abstract:
This study investigated 1) the effect of jigsaw technique on improving upper secondary school (tenth grade) Thai students reading comprehension, and compared the effect of jigsaw technique on reading comprehension sub skills, literal and higher order, and investigated the students attitudes toward the jigsaw technique. The participants were 24 female students who were studying in Matthayom 4 (tenth grade) in the academic year 2019 at a public high school in Chonburi, Thailand. The data were collected using reading comprehension pretest and posttest and a 4 point Linkert scale questionnaire about students attitudes towards applying the jigsaw technique in learning reading. Analysis of the data collected consisted of mean scores and standard deviation, and the t-test was utilized to see if there was a significant difference between the mean scores of the overall reading comprehension in the pretest and posttest. The findings revealed that 1) students reading comprehension posttest scores were significantly higher than the pretest scores (P<0.05), 2) Jigsaw technique had a greater effect on higher order reading comprehension sub skill, and 3) the students had positive attitudes towards the technique for learning reading. Moreover, the findings of the study have pedagogical implications for teachers in the realm of English reading comprehension instruction in order to prepare reading comprehension activities, develop functional lesson plans, create effective English reading comprehension tests, and solve students reading comprehension problems
