A study of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) on improving Thai lower secondary school (ninth grade) students reading comprehension
Abstract:
The aims of the study were to investigate 1) the effects of CLIL on Thai lower secondary (ninth grade) students reading comprehension, and 2) the students attitudes after use of CLIL instruction. The participants were 20 ninth-grade students who were in an Intensive Science-Math Classroom (ISMC) program in a public school, Bangkok. The experiment was conducted in English Fundamental 6 (E23102), in the second semester of the academic year 2019, which lasted for 1 month. The researcher collected the data both in quantitative and qualitative form. The arithmetic average was used to investigate the effects of CLIL. The qualitative data were analyzed by thematic analysis, and presented in frequency, means, and percentage. The findings revealed that 1) the posttest results were significantly higher than the pretest results after use of CLIL instruction on reading comprehension, and 2) students attitudes were positive toward the use of CLIL instruction. Besides, the students expressed their positive opinions towards learning reading comprehension through CLIL activities. Based on the results, it can be concluded that CLIL can enhance students reading comprehension
