Abstract:
The trade war between China and the United States (U.S.) has intensified in recent years, gaining the attention of the international media. Different news stories feature a wide range of viewpoints and perspectives, which frequently influence the thoughts and judgements of readers. In relation to the U.S.-China trade war, this research evaluated and compared the linguistic aspects of the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and China Daily (CD). This research undertook qualitative and quantitative analysis of 46 chosen news pieces from WSJ and CD from the standpoint of ideational function, based on Hallidays Systematic Functional Linguistic (SFL) theory. According to transitivity analysis, the news reports were separated into 1777 sentences and categorized. WSJ and CD were both impartial in their coverage of the trade war, according to an analysis of the distribution and terms of transitivity processes in two news agencies. Their bias, on the other hand, is impossible to conceal. WSJ emphasized that the U.S. actions are legal and justified. Chinas resolve to grow and follow its own development path was emphasized by CD. One explanation for this disparity is that press coverage unquestionably benefits the government. Furthermore, the cultural aspects of each country have a significant effect in the reporting of international news events. This research applied discourse analysis of news reports to investigate the cultural elements that contribute to linguistic disparities and to assist readers improve their critical reading ability of news.
