Efficacy 3% glycine max cream extract versus 2% alpha arbutin cream in facial skin whitening in Thai
Abstract:
Background: Nowadays, white skin becomes popular among both man and women. The difference in skin color is caused by the melanogenic activity within the melanocytes, the proportion of mature melanosomes, and the distribution to the surrounding keratinocytes. Human skin color is influenced by both genetic and external factors. The excess in melanin pigment deposition not only affect the color of the skin but also cause some pigmentary disorders. As the use of synthetic chemical whitening agents is limited because of their long term complications, natural plant-derived whitening agents with melanogenesis inhibitory properties become a great alternative for treatment of pigment disorders. The extract from soy bean called Glycine max has skin whitening effect by acting as a melanosome transfer inhibitor with antioxidant properties, anti-inflammatory effects, stimulation of elastin and collagen, protection against UV radiation and anti-carcinogenic effect. STI and BBI are serine protease inhibitors of Glycine Max so that they suppress the activation of PAR-2 receptor. As a result, melanosomes transportation to neighborhood keratinocytes is impaired and skin whitening is established. In this study, total 20 volunteers of age between 20 and 60 year old, both male and female with Fitzpatrick skin III-VI, diagnosed by dermatologist who willingly wanted to whiten their faces were collected to participate in comparative double-blind, randomized, controlled split face clinical trial for 12 weeks. 3% Glycine max extract cream and 2% Alpha arbutin cream were instructed to apply twice daily in split face design for 12 weeks. The improvement was measured by mexameter® MX18 and VISIA® analysis and the results were statistically analyzed. The results showed that 3% Glycine max extract cream is effective in reducing the melanin index since 4th week of application. No complications were observed during and after the study.
