The Use of picture drawing tasks to motivate students' oral production in communicative language classrooms
Abstract:
Numerous problems have been identified in communicative language classrooms with regard to students' refusal to produce oral production for communication. Despite a considerable amount of time spent in learning a foreign language, the majority of students still have low speaking competence as well as less participation and interaction in class. This study aims to investigate the effects of using picture drawing tasks to motivate students' oral production in communicative language teaching. The study attempts to find justifiable answers to the research questions as to whether or not the teaching model motivates students' oral production, improves their speaking proficiency and contributes to their favorable attitudes towards English learning. The subjects of the study comprise twelve students of upper secondary level, selected by means of a purposive random sampling method. The data were collected by means of behavioral observation and subsequently analyzed with the use of simple statistics: percentage. The results of the study reveal that the use of Picture Drawing Tasks is effective in developing students' speaking skill. The model promotes the students' oral production, improves their speaking proficiency and results in their favorable attitudes towards learning English.
