The Use of a modified functional dialogue model in developing speaking skill

Abstract:
In accordance with the problems found in teaching a communicative speaking class, lacking motivation causes students to have low proficiency in speaking as well as unfavorable attitudes towards studying speaking English. The research study aimed to investigate the effects of using a designed teaching model, with focus on modified functional dialogues, on teaching speaking. It was intended to find out whether or not the teaching model could contribute to learners' speaking ability improvement and their favorable attitudes towards learning speaking. The subjects of the study comprised 14 Mattayomsuksa 3 students at a secondary school, selected via a purposive sampling method. Data were gathered by means of observation, with the use of a speaking behavioral observation form, then analyzed by using the percentage. The results revealed that the use of the Modified Functional Dialogue Model contributed to the improvement of the students' speaking competence in the aspects of fluency, accuracy, and effectiveness of speaking. Besides, the designed model helped the students form favorable attitudes towards studying speaking; they interacted with their peers and the researcher by using English in class and participated in speaking activities with favorable speaking behaviors in the aspects of attention, enthusiasm, confidence, and satisfaction.
