The use of a communicative grammar-based task in EFL teaching
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to investigate the results of the designed model-the Communicative, Grammar-based Task which integrated the teaching of communicative grammar through the process of a task-based with the two aims: to develop explicit knowledge of a L2 grammatical feature (dative alternation) and to provide opportunities for interaction focused on an exchange of information. The subjects of study were 8 Mattayomsuksa Six students (equivalent to grade 12 in the American System) at a school in the Northeast of Thailand. The research tools employed in collecting data comprised a placement test and the grammaticality judgment tests with the help of audio recordings and a teacher's journal. The data obtained were analyzed to answer the two research questions-does the Communicative, Grammar-based Task promote students' knowledge of a grammar point (dative alternation)? and, does the Communicative, Grammar-based Task promote students' interactions focused on a exchange of information? The study results revealed that 8 subjects obtained the percentages of proficiency gain scores of the 3 grammaticality judgment tests which increased from the first one to the last one. In addition, the subjects produced negotiation of meaning which increased from the first lesson to the last lesson. So, it can concluded that the use of the Communicative, Grammar-based Task could promote students' knowledge of a grammar point (dative alternation) and the interactions focused on an exchange of information.
