Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to study the adjustment ability of first-year students in every faculty at Chulalongkorn University during the academic of 1999. The study was also done to measure the correlation between adjustment ability academic performance. Using systematic stratified sampling, the subjects were 767 first year students from the fields of biological science, physical science and technology, humanities, and social sciences. The Student Adpatation to College Questionnaire (SACQ) was used measure adjustment of the subjects. All questionnaires were analyzed by SPSS/PC for percentage, means, standard deviation, unpaired t-test analysis of variance (ANOVA), and LSD-test. The result revealed that first-year students during the academic year of 1999 had moderate adjustment level. Gender, birth-place, family status, and personal expense were not related to adjustment ability. The fields of study were related to academic adjustment with statistical significance. Participating in extra-cumcular activities, age, family income and educational level of Parents were related to social adjustment with statistical sigruficance. Participating in extra-cumcular, activities, age, the fields of study, family income, educational level of parents. Occupation of the mother and residential were related to personal-emotional adjustment with statistical significance. Age, the fields of study, family income, educational level of parents were related to institutional Attachment and overall adjustment with statistical significance. Every category of adjustment ability Except social adjustment were positive correlated with first semester grads (GPAX) with statistical significance (p=0.01). In conclusion, this study revealed that various factors were related to the adjustment ability of the first-year students. Results can be applied to prevent adjustment problem in university students.
