Adult learners' attitudes towards the use of L1 in an English speaking class
Abstract:
Adult learner attitudes toward first language (L1) use in English speaking classes in Thailand were studied. Attitudes, benefits, and disadvantages of L1 classroom use were examined. Data was provided by a questionnaire posted online with Google Forms. Purposive samples were 60 adult students. For quantitative responses, data was analyzed by Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS), used to perform data manipulation and analysis with simple instructions. Descriptive statistics were used to identify mean and standard deviations. Results were that most samples had positive attitudes about L1 use in English speaking classes, believing it to be beneficial, despite its irrelevancy to educational goals. Limited number of samples at different levels of English competency, age, and levels of study may have affected the outcome, which suggests that further research may be in order. These findings may help teachers in Thailand prepare lesson plans for adult learners of English more effectively, to meet their needs
