Abstract:
The study aimed to investigate teacher beliefs about using songs to teach English language to primary students and to explore the teachers behaviour while using songs to teach English to primary students. The participants were 50 English teachers who taught at primary schools in 3 provinces in Thailand. A questionnaire which was adapted from Şevik (2011) was used as an instrument to obtain the data. The obtained data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) to calculate the descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation (SD). The findings showed that teachers reported high levels of positive agreement according to interpretation of the overall beliefs and behaviour. They believed that songs accelerated the memorization of vocabulary, were useful for introducing new vocabulary to the classroom and useful to develop students listening skills. Their behaviour also paralleled their beliefs in that they used songs to help students to learn vocabulary faster, taught vocabulary through songs to develop students listening skills and used songs to practice with the students to make them familiar with vocabulary. This study reflects teachers behaviour in terms of what they do in real situations in the classroom
