Developing an English literacy training program for engineering staff in Thailand
Abstract:
This research explored and developed an English literacy training program addressing the needs of the engineering staff in a workplace context. The ADDIE model under a qualitative research approach was used as an instructional design system that enhanced continuous improvement of training program design, along with Kirkpatricks four-levels of evaluation measuring the training program outcomes. The researcher took the role of trainer and training program developer in this study. The process of exploring and developing the training program was conducted in two phases (Phase I - the initial training program and Phase II - the modified training program) in order to make its development more precise and reliable. The ADDIE process: Analysis for needs, Training Design, Training Development, Training Implementation and Training Evaluation, generated a systematic operation process from start to finish, and transitioned to another process cycle. This research found that engineering staff at the research site needed listening, speaking, writing and presentation skills in which they could learn and apply at work. The training program was designed and developed to address these needs for phases. The research also found that the best training method for adult learners was to design and develop authentic work-related content and material. The improved skills also relied on peerinteraction or collaborative learning as it helped learners/participants to gain more confidence and improve the learning outcomes. Thus, the key role of the trainer was to keep the adult learners motivated and create a classroom environment that allows more practice opportunities
