A Study of the willingness to communicate in english and speaking abilities of undergraduate students using mobile assisted language learning
Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the connections between Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) on (1) willingness to communicate (WTC) in English of the undergraduate students and (2) on their speaking abilities. The research is a quasi-experimental study employing mixed method design with 5-Likert scale questionnaires for quantitative data, and speaking tests and student log for qualitative data. The participants were among the first year undergraduate students and selected by using purposive sampling technique. In total, there were 20 students in the experimental group and 20 students in the control group. The quantitative results showed no improvement of willingness to communicate after the experiment. From overall speaking assessment, the experimental group was found gaining significantly greater speaking abilities comparing to the control group. By breaking and assessing the speaking abilities into five specific labels, the results showed that experimental group gained significantly higher mean scores in label (2) Error-free Total T-unit and (3) appropriate pronunciation. Results from student log confirmed a strong connection between MALL and speaking abilities and some connection between MALL and WTC. Pedagogical
implications and recommendation for future studies are also suggested.
