Abstract:
The aim of this research was to study the possibility of producing rigid polyurethane
foam by 2 types of blowing agents 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluorobutene (HFC-364mfc) and 1,1,1,3,3-
pentafluoropropane (HFC-245fa). This research was to compare processing conditions including
pressure, temperature, density, compressive strength and opend-closed cell characteristics/
properties between these new blowing agents and the referenced chemical, 1,1-dichloro-1-
fluoroethane (HCFC-141b).
The results revealed that HFC-365mfc and HFC-245fa can potentially substitute
HCFC-141b. Since they provided physical and mechanical properties of PU foam assimilar to
reference a substance. They are also miscible with polyol. However, the chemicals ratio of
blowing agent showed the upward trend of reaction and pressure butdensity, compressive
strength and closed-cell property decreased. The significant factor of process is the temperature.
Nonetheless, these two chemicals did not affect the processing protocol of the PU-foam
manufacturing, making them promising options for the PU-foam industry.
