An Investigation of the Relationship between Attitudinal Factors and Language Learning Among Agriculture Students at KMIT Ladkrabang
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to discover the relationship between
attitudinal factors and achievement in the study of English. The subjects
were 105 first year diploma students at Faculty of Agricultural Technology
at KMIT Ladkrabang. A questionnaire was used to measure the students'
attitudes and motivation towards learning English. The students' language
proficiency level was taken from their averaged scores on the EAT 1 course
in the first semester.
In the first part of this dissertation, Chapter 1 to 3, the main
thesis and the three broad research questions are formulated: (1) if the
EAT students are IlPtivated in learning English, (2) if so, what causes
them to be motivated; if not, what causes them not to be motivated, (3)
how does such motivation facilitate their learning process. Specific
research hypothesis were tested by a combination of quantitative and
qualitative methods.
The results allow the conclusion that the majority of thiS group
of students are highly motivated and have positive attitudes towards
learning English. Since they realise the importance of English for their
present academic and future occupational purposes. This findings appear
to conflict with EAT teachers views of student motivation. The correlations
between attitudinal factors and English language proficiency were
not statistically significant.
Implications from these findings include suggestions on: the importance
of EAP and EOP, the teachers' orientation handlings affective factors,
tests in line with the programme & method, and changes in the EAT system.
