Abstract:
The objectives of this research were to understand figures of speech for
dhamma communication of Suanmokkhaphalaram, Suratthani Province, and to
investigate the success factors of the dhamma communication of preachers from
Suanmokkhaphalaram. The concepts and theories applied as the guideline of the
research included the dhamma communication concept, theories of figures of speech,
Berlos model of communication, learning theories, and semiotics. This study was
conducted using qualitative methods. Data were collected through the analysis of 19
paintings based upon three commitments proposed by Buddhadãsa Bikkhu and
interviews with preachers. The research results revealed that the figures of speech in
dhamma communication through paintings consisted of: a) parable, b) metaphor, c)
metonymy, d) hyperbole, e) personification, f) symbol, g) periscope, h) trivia quiz, i)
reference, j) allegory, and l) implications. In addition, the success factors of the
preachers in dhamma communication included (1) eight essential characteristics of the
preachers including a) confidence in their own unique styles, b) observance, c) quick
reaction towards immediate events, d) good planning, e) creativity, f) good personality
and friendliness, g) friendliness, and h) sincerity in preaching; (2) the determination of
preaching contents based upon a) problem-based learning, b) discovery-based
learning, c) students expectation, and d) natural-based learning; and (3) preaching
techniques including a) the ability to convey messages, b) training techniques, c) an
emphasis on the benefits of the audience and participants, and d) the construction of
learning motivation
