A Study of English Teaching Methods of Mahavihara Dhamma-Vinaya University in Myanmar
Abstract:
The purposes of this research study are: 1) To study the English teaching methods Mahavihara Dhamma-Vinaya University; 2) To study the problems concerning the English teaching methods of Mahavihara Dhamma-Vinaya University; 3) To purpose the solutions of English teaching methods of Mahavihara Dhamma-Vinaya University.
The research is a mixed method of qualitative and quantitative researches in nature. A questionnaire is used for collecting quantitative data from 40 teachers and interview is used for collecting qualitative data from 10 key informants. For analyzing quantitative data statistics including percentage, mean, and standard deviation.
Findings of the study are as follow;
1. From a study of English teaching methods of Mahavihara Dhamma-Vinaya University in Myanmar. It found that for the methods of English teaching, the overall level is high with a value of 3.20, while considering each aspects the statement of talking in pairs is very helpful for improving in teaching was high with a value of 2.40, the aspect of the method of Daily conversations one of the necessary methods was moderate with a value of 1.72.
2. In respect of a study of the problems concerning methods of English teaching at Mahavihara Dhamma-Vinaya University. It found that there were 11 problems concerning methods of English teaching at MDU including, 1.The time schedule is influenced much on English teaching; 2.Students have low ability in English pronunciation; 3.Students have low ability in English listening skills; 4.Students have low ability in English speaking skills; 5.Students have low ability in English reading skills; 6.Students have low ability English writing skills; 7. Students have low ability in acquiring lesson; 8. it is very hard to teach English skills to students in different English level; 9.it is very hard to teach English skills to students in different ages; 10.
Most students pay less attention in class; 11. Language Communication is hard between teachers and students;
3. With regard a suggestion of solutions for improving the methods of English teaching at the Mahavihara Dhamma-Vinaya University. It revealed that there were 11 solutions for improving the methods of English teaching at MDU including, 1.the problem of time schedule be set up appropriately; 2. Students were required to practice pronunciation of the new words, test pronunciation every week before starting classes, play the game of pronunciation in class, and be evaluated by teacher and other students; 3. teachers and parents should collaborate to help student to have a good environment; 4. Students with low innate ability should study hard; 5. teachers can prepare appropriated lessons for them; 6. the foundation should arrange pupils with the same age as much as possible in one classroom, and if there were many pupils with different ages, the teacher should test pupils knowledge and arrange them according to the result of test; 7. the teacher should prepare lessons with some games and rewards, make fun in teaching, or telling a story before or after teaching; and 8. the foundation should provide a Myanmar assistant to help foreign teachers and the foreign teachers should learn Myanmar language to communicate with pupils as well.
