A Study of Problems in English Listening Comprehension of Matthayomsuksa Students
Abstract:
The purposes of this study were: 1) to study of problems in English listening comprehension of Matthayomsuksa students regarding factors from listening to the text, speaker, listener, and physical setting; and 2) to find out listening strategies to solve the problems in English listening for Matthayomsuksa students. The participants included 60 students and 5 teachers from Matthayomsuksa at Wat Salak Nuea School. There were two research tools: 1) Questionnaires and 2) In-depth interviews. They were selected by quota sampling techniques. The questionnaires results were analyzed by using percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The major findings were as follows. 1) The students faced problems in English listening comprehension related to listening to the text, speaker, listener and physical setting. The students had problems with technique words in the message. They also had difficulties to understand when the speaker spoke too fast. They had limited vocabulary, poor grammar as well as lacked of concentration. While, speakers sounded is unclear and used poor-quality equipment were also the causes of problems for their listening. 2) To solve problems in English listening. The students needed to have the positive attitudes on English and paid more attention to speakers. Moreover, the students needed to practice listening with native speaker, and watched English media to get familiar with the English sound. Finally, the students needed to increase vocabulary, grammar, slang, and idiom.
