A Study of Problems on English Listening Skill of Master of Arts Students in English of International Program the Faculty of Humanities Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University
Abstract:
The research studied the problems on English listening skill of Master of Arts students in English of International Program, the Faculty of Humanities, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University. It had two objectives: (1) to study the problems on English listening skill of Master of Arts students in English of International Program, the Faculty of Humanities, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University and (2) to provide the ways to solve the problems on English listening skill of Master of Arts students in English of International Program, the Faculty of Humanities, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University. The study was both quantitative and qualitative method. The sample group of this study consisted 25 the second year students form Master of Arts in English (International Program) at Faculty of Humanities, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University. The tool used for collecting data was the 34- items of the questionnaire, and open-ended interview. The statistic: frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation used for analysis of data.
The results of study were found as follows:
The result of English Listening skill testing among the second year students form Master of Arts in English (International Program) at Faculty of Humanities, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, it found the level of over all of studying English listening skill was at the level of mean = 2.87 as moderately high. The encountered problems on English listening skill, were as follow: (1) English listening problems related to listening material demonstrated slang and idiom expression were the most significant factors that made them difficult to understand the listening text (mean 3.36). (2) English listening problems related to listener showed students find difficult when they lack interesting (mean = 3.24). (3) English listening problems related to speakers identified the meaning of the words which are not pronounced clearly (mean = 3.32). (4) English listening problems related to psychological characteristics indicated the most dominant factors which caused students feel nervous and worried when they dont understand the spoken text (mean = 3.24). (5) English listening problems related to physical setting showed it is difficult for students to concentrate with noises around (mean = 3.48). Thus, they have high trouble.
Other above problems on English listening skill, learners reported lacking of opportunity to use their English and being lazy to practice. To improve, learners suggested the ways to solve the English listening problems. They were: 1) reciting vocabulary, 2) practice pronunciation, 3) making conversation with foreigners, 4) watching English movies or TV and radios programs and 5) practicing regularly.
