A Study of English Speaking Skill Problems of Khmer Krom Student of Faculty of Humanities at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University
Abstract:
The objectives of this research aims 1) to investigate problems of English-speaking skills problems encountered by Khmer Krom students learning B.A. degree of faculty of humanities at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, 2) how to solve of English-speaking skill problems encountered by Khmer Krom students learning Bachelors Degree of Arts in Faculty of Humanities at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University. The research mixed method consisted of qualitative and quantitative. A questionnaire used for collecting quantitative data from 20 Khmer Krom students in fourth year majoring in English at the Faculty of humanities, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University in the academic year 2019 and in-depth interviews were used for collecting qualitative data from 5 teachers and 10 key informants. Statistics is included Percentage, Mean and Standard Deviation (SD) presented below.
The results were found that:
1. The problems as English-speaking skill problems were at a high level as the following: 1) The cause of problems of English speaking skill was found from Students' Motivations, Thats students felt not confident, tense, embarrassing and not brave to speak out, resulting in at overall such as Moderate level for a mean of 3.20 and 2.95. 2) The cause of the problems in English-speaking skill was found from the teachers teaching techniques that the teachers speak a lot, resulting in overall such as high level for a mean of 4.25. 3) The cause of Problems in English-speaking skill was found from the environment and students lacks time to speak English thats most of them just speak with mother language and spend a little time to practice speaking English, resulting in overall such at high level for a mean of 3.80 and 3.65.
2. The following is derived from an interview with key informants. The most problems in the English speaking skill of fourth Khmer Krom students often encountered included 1) students lack of vocabulary and grammar. 2) The students make mistakes in pronouncing, and often use their mother tongue. 3) The students cannot hear and not understand when other speaking. 4) The students lack confidence.
Finally, the researcher proposed a solution to deal with the problems of English speaking skill problems included: 1) Students should review and study more vocabulary and grammar of the English language. 2) The student should read a newspaper and many books to get more know knowledge and improve pronunciation. 3) The students should often listen to native speakers speak on social media like YouTube, DVD, CD, etc. 4) Students should practice speaking English via social networks and attend activities based on the easy game and speaking tasks that include everyone.
