The English Essay Writing for High School Students in Kawkareik Province, Kayin State, The Republic of The Union of Myanmar
Abstract:
This study is a documentary and qualitative research with two main objectives: 1) To study the English essay writing for high school students In Kawkareik province, Kayin State, The Republic of The Union of Myanmar. 2) To Provide the ways to comprehend the English essay writing for high school students In Kawkareik province, Kayin State, The Republic of The Union of Myanmar. A descriptive survey research design was adopted in this study. Then, the purpose of this research was to investigate the challenges that students faced in learning essay writing skills in English language at high school in Kawkareik province, Kayin State, The Republic of The Union of Myanmar. The specific objectives of the study were to determine methods of teachers used in teaching essay writing skills, investigated the challenges that students faced in learning essay writing skills, establish strategies students employed in learning essay writing skills.
The target population was English language teachers and ten students in Kawkareik district. Stratified random sampling and purposive sampling techniques used for the sample group population for this study consisted of 190 high school students and 10 teachers from two government basic education high school in Kawkareik province, Kayin State, The Republic of The Union of Myanmar. For research methodology in this study, researcher used statistics, frequency, percentage, mean, S.D. (standard deviation), pre-test and post-check. The validity and reliability of the instruments were established through a pilot study and the input of experts in the area for this study.
In the research findings, researcher indicated that common methods of the teachers used in teaching essay writing skills are: lecture, question and answer and teacher demonstration. However, group work, peer teaching and role play which have been proven to enhance learning of writing skills among other methods were the least used. The results further revealed that major the challenges that students face in learning English essay writing skills include: inadequate content mastery, incorrect use of grammar, first language (L1) interference, limited vocabulary and inadequate teaching and learning resources. The results also showed that the majority of the students do not frequently use interactive learning strategies. In view of these findings, it was established that teaching methods and learning strategies used by both teachers and students influenced the learning of L2 writing skills at school in Kawkareik province, Kayin state, The Republic of The Union of Myanmar.
