An Analytical Study of English Clauses Used in a Map of the Journey by Sayadaw U Jotika
Abstract:
This thesis entitled An Analytical Study of English Clauses Used in a Map of the Journey by Sayadaw U Jotika has three objectives: 1) to study English clauses used in a Map of the Journey by Sayadaw U Jotika, 2) to analyze the types of English clauses used in a Map of the Journey by Sayadaw U Jotik, and 3) to show the frequency of the usage of English clauses in a Map of the Journey by Sayadaw U Jotika.
By reading and studying some books concerning the topic of the problem, this research is a qualitative research in nature focusing on a documentary method. Then the researcher collects the information from the books, documents and the data from in a Map of the Journey by Sayadaw U Jotika, Myanmar.
The study was found that a clause is a part of the sentence that contains a subject and a verb. There are two kinds of clauses; Main clause (independent clause), a clause that can stand alone as a sentence (can make sense by itself); also known as a simple sentence. Subordinate clause (dependent clause), a clause that adds the additional information to the main clause, but it cannot stand alone as a sentence. Then subordinate clause classifies three kinds of clauses in the sentence. They are noun clause, adjective or relative clause and adverbial clause.
The percentage of the noun clause is basing on its types and functions in a Map of the Journey by Sayadaw U Jotika: 21 noun clause as subject= 28.76%, 42 noun clause as object = 57.53% and 10 noun clause as object of the preposition= 13. 69%.
The percentage of an adjective clause is basing on its types and functions in a Map of the Journey by Sayadaw U Jotika: 63 adjective clauses as subject= 62.02%, 48 adjective clause as object = 51.06% and 2 adjective clause as object of the preposition= 2.12%.
The percentage of an adverb clause is basing on its types and functions in a Map of the Journey by Sayadaw U Jotika: 138 adverb clause of time = 39.09%, 79 adverb clause of place = 22.37% and 136 adverb clause of reason or purpose = 38.52%.
