Air Distribution Study of Natural Ventilated Buildings to Decrease Concentration of Volatile Organic Compounds from Paint Product by using Computational Fluid Dynamic software
Abstract:
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are commonly found in indoor environment.
Building materials, especially paint products, are major sources of VOCs which can
affect indoor air quality. A design of residential building (in this study: townhouse) with
no concern about ventilation can cause high concentration ofVOCs in some areas of the
building. Presence of VOCs in indoor environment can cause several health effects on
people who spend their time inside the building. Major VOCs (Benzene, Toluene,
Ethlybenzene, Xylene, and Formaldehyde) from selected paint products were monitored
in small-test chamber by using Fourier Transfer Infrared technique. The amount and
emission rate of each compound were used in simulation process. Seventeen opening
configurations were simulated under Computational Fluid Dynamic software (FloVent
5.1) to find efficiency of each strategy. The results show that building under singlesided
natural ventilation with casement window can decrease concentration of VOCs
below TWA standard in 12 hours, which required shorter time than sliding window type
(one week). As a result, casement windows can act as wing-wall to create pressure
different, and can control wind direction to flow pass through windows' opening.
However. using cross-ventilation with casement and sliding window gives better
performance to reduce the concentration in pretty short time.
