Abstract:
This independent study is to design and fabricate of internal cracks in welding specimens. The
purposes of this independent study are applying to use for training and certifying of non-destructive
testing inspectors according to ASNT-TC-1A and decreasing amount of import specimens. The
specimens were fabricated from low carbon steel (ASTM standard grade A36) by arc welding
process on groove weld in flat position and had been tested by radiographic testing follow ASME
code section V and VIII. There are two factors from mechanical force and joint design for
fabricating specimens those can be controlled direction, dimension and position of cracks in the
weldment. The results from mechanical force factor found that cracks not straight and bigger than
joint design factor. These cracks are artificial cracks differ from natural cracks in the welding work.
The direction, dimension and position of cracks in the weldment can be controlled. In case ofjoint
design factor the results found that cracks quite straight, sharp and narrow. These cracks similar to
natural cracks in the welding work, which suitable to use as specimens for non-destructive testing.
Additionlly, the direction and position of cracks can be controlled in the target.
