The study of metadiscourse in the state of the union addresses delivered by Barack Obama
Abstract:
Metadiscourse markers are one of the crucial devices used to construct
persuasive power in public speeches due to their roles in organizing the text,
indicating the speaker presence, and capturing the audience s attention. The goal of
this research is to study the use of metadiscourse markers in the State of the Union
Addresses delivered by Barack Obama and also the role of the metadiscourse
markers. The data of this study involved eight addresses of the State of the Union
between 2009 and 2016. The data analysis was drawn on Hylands (2005)
classification of metadiscourse markers. Quantitative analysis revealed that Barack
Obamas State of the Union Addresses featured markedly more interactional
metadiscourse markers than those of interactive markers. Textual analysis further
indicated that the former was used in an attempt to express his attitude, engage
listeners and create solidarity rather than guide listeners to follow each issue in the
addresses. This could be seen through the greatest use of self-mentions, e.g.
referential pronouns.
