An investigation of move structure of research article abstracts in IAFOR journals
Abstract:
The present study aimed to investigate the structural organization of research
article abstract written by Asian writers and non-Asian writers and in the IAFOR
journals. The sample of this study consisted of 40 abstracts from the IAFOR journals
published during 2012-2016. The samples were classified as Asian and non-Asian
writers. Hylands (2000) five-move model was used as the analytical framework for
the analysis move structure in abstracts.
The findings indicated that the moves employed by Asian and Non-Asian
writers were slightly different. Findings also showed that the function of the
Introduction, Purpose, Method, and Product moves were conventional, while the
Conclusion move was as optional move in both groups. The findings revealed that the
most preferred move sequences of abstracts used by Asian writers were I-P-M-Pr-C
(30%), I-P-M-Pr (15%), P-M-Pr (15%), and P-M-Pr-C (10%), respectively. In the
Non-Asian writers, the most preferred move sequences were I-P-M-Pr-C (20%),
I-P-M-Pr (15%), P-M-Pr-C (10%), and I-P (10%), respectively. Finally, the move
reversal and move repetition were found in the abstracts among the Asian and
non-Asian writers. Hopefully, the findings of the present study could contribute
greatly to pedagogical implications for inexperienced writers in order to write higher
quality article abstracts.
