labor pain, coping with labor pain, and satisfaction with childbirth experiences. The sample consisted of
50 parturients in labor and delivery room at Somdejpranangchaosirikit Hospital. These parturients who
met inclusion criteria were selected by include criteria. The first 25 paturients were assigned into the
control group and the others were assigned into the experimental group. The control group received
regular nursing care but the experimental group received both regular nursing care and labor support by
a female relative. Research instruments included three measures including the suffering from labor pain
scale, the coping with labor pain scale, and the satisfaction with childbirth experiences Questionnaire.
Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics; frequency, mean, standard deviation, and tested mean
differences with Independent t-test.
The results revealed that parturients in the experimental group had significantly more
satisfaction with childbirth experiences than those inthe control group (p = .006). However, there were
no significant difference of the mean suffering score and coping with labor pain between the
experimental and the control groups (p = .098 and p = .065). These findings suggested that the labor
support by a female relative could increase satisfaction with childbirth experiences of the primiparous
parturients. Therefore, midwife should apply this labor support by a female relative to take care of the
parturients in order to promote satisfaction with childbirth experiences.
