Abstract:
This study aimed to examine the impacts of using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) towards English as Second Language (ESL) learners and their perception towards use of the strategy. Collaborative Strategic Reading is an instructional strategy that enhances reading comprehension, vocabulary development, knowledge enrichment, and fosters positive relationship among peers. The strategy aids in constructing text-meaning by brainstorming and predicting (before reading), monitoring understanding and getting the main idea (during reading), summarizing and discussing (after reading).
The data were collected through reading comprehension tests were analyzed and found that students posttest mean score x̄=17.31 were higher than their pretest mean score x̄=8.41 with significance value (p)=0.01. Analysis of Students Reflective Journal and Focus Group Discussion found that the students had positive perception towards use of CSR in ESL reading lessons. CSR built confidence, monitored learning, and encouraged active participation. Further, it fostered positive interaction, motivated learners, shared main ideas, and improved their reading comprehension. The findings emphasized that using Collaborative Strategic Reading significantly enhanced the reading comprehension of ESL learners and improved their test scores
