Developing mixed-age curriculum to promote early childhood development in Child Development Centers

Abstract: This research aimed to 1) develop mixed-age curriculum to enhance early childhood development in child development centers.2) study the development of early childhood development in child development centers by using the curriculum of mixed-age instruction. The target group of this research was 2 groups of both boys and girls at the level of early childhood education aged between one year and a half to three years in 1 small, 1 medium and 1 large sized child development centers administrators and parents of these 3 development centers had involved. Under the Sub-district Administration Organizations in Mueang district, Lampang Province. Teachers, The research instruments were an instruction manual, and the mixed-age curriculum, a questionnaire for administrators and guardians, a questionnaire for teachers, test of early childhood development for physical and intellectual aspect and observation form for early childhood development for the emotional and social aspect by the early childhood development. The data were analyzed by using the Index of Item Objective Congruence, Means and standard deviation and the analysis of the content. Research Findings The mixed-age curriculum which had been established can support the development of the early childhood children in all aspects. The curriculum contents 38 learning units which cover the content from setting 3 main activities namely learning activity, interaction promotion activity and life skill activity. The curriculum were assessed and evaluated by teachers, administrators and parents and attained the acceptable level. It can be summarized as follows: As for the development of the early childhood children in 4 aspects from using the mixed-age curriculum, it found that physical and intellectual aspect: the development of the early childhood children both before and after the use of the curriculum resulted that the children of all 3 stages achieved many before the test and achieved the similar results after the test. For the emotional aspect, the children of all 3 stages achieved many respectively. When taken into consideration, the children aged 1.5 to 2 years achieved higher level of development than other stages. For the social aspect, the children of all 3 stages achieved higher before the test and achieved the similar results after the test.
