Perspectives in English language learning : an exploration of integrative and instrumental motivation
Abstract:
Motivation is one of the main factors affecting English language learning
(Gardner, 1985). The purposes of this study were to explore the levels of students
motivation in English language learning of Grade 10-12 students at a secondary
school in Thailand, and to investigate the differences between instrumental motivation
and integrative motivation. A quantitative approach was used in this research with
a questionnaire to collect the data. The data were analyzed by means, percentages,
standard deviations, and an independent t-test. The participants of this study were 245
students selected from Grades 10-12 in the English Program. The results of this study
showed that the motivation of Grade 10-12 students had a high level of both
integrative and instrumental motivation on English language learning. There were
significant differences between integrative motivation and instrumental motivation.
