Abstract:
The objective of this study was to explore the effects of the self-care behavior promotion program, based on the application of motivation theory for disease prevention of diseases in the elderly with glaucoma. This study was quasi-experimental research. The 60 samples were divided into 2 groups, the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group participated in the self-care behavior promotion program, while the control group received standard of nursing care. The data were collected by using 1) the interview form with respect of perceived severity of chronic glaucoma 2) perceived susceptibility of higher intraocular pressure 3) self-efficacy expectations in performing behaviors to control intraocular pressure 4) expectations on the effectiveness of feedback from performing behaviors to control intraocular pressure 5) behaviors to control intraocular pressure and 6) the assistance of main caregivers. The data were analyzed by using the independent t-test and paired t-test The findings of the study revealed that the experimental group, which participated in the self-care behavior promotion program, had higher mean scores of perceived severity of chronic glaucoma, perceived susceptibility of higher intraocular pressure, self-efficacy expectations in performing behaviors to control intraocular pressure, expectations on effectiveness of feedback from performing behaviors to control intraocular pressure, and behaviors to control intraocular pressure significance than the control group (p < .05). Based on the results of the study, it was recommended that the program be applied to provide care for elderly patients with other eye diseases in order to promote self-care behaviors and the participation of main caregivers. This would enable the elderly to perform behaviors appropriate to their diseases and have a good quality of life.
