Abstract: วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ เป็นการศึกษาถึงกลวิธีการแปลและการแก้ปัญหาทางการแปลที่เกิดจากความแตกต่างทางวัฒนธรรมในวรรณกรรมเรื่อง หลายชีวิต และฉบับแปล Many Lives ผลการศึกษาวัฒนธรรมไทยในต้นฉบับ เมื่อจำแนกตามการจัดแบ่งประเภทข้อมูลทางวัฒนธรรม 5 ประเภทของยูจีน ไนดา (Eugene Nida, 1964) พบว่า คำทางวัฒนธรรมที่พบมากที่สุด คือ วัฒนธรรมทางวัตถุ รองลงมาได้แก่ วัฒนธรรมทางสังคม วัฒนธรรมทางศาสนา วัฒนธรรมทางนิเวศ และวัฒนธรรมทางภาษา ตามลำดับ ส่วนด้านกลวิธีการแปลพบว่า ผู้แปลใช้กลวิธีการปรับบทแปลในการถ่ายทอดความหมายของคำศัพท์ทางวัฒนธรรมมากที่สุด ซึ่งประกอบด้วย การเพิ่มเติมคำอธิบาย การปรับเป็นวลีหรือประโยค และการตัดคำหรือสำนวนออก รองลงมาคือ วิธีการแปลตรงตัว และวิธีการถ่ายทอดตัวอักษร ตามลำดับ นอกจากนี้ ยังพบว่าเนื้อหาบางส่วนในเรื่องเป็นการจำลองเอาเหตุการณ์ทางสังคมที่เกิดขึ้นจริงมาสอดแทรกไว้ ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นว่า นอกเหนือจากความรู้ด้านภาษา ผู้แปลยังจำเป็นต้องมีความรู้อื่น ๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้อง เช่น บริบททางสังคมและวัฒนธรรมทั้งในและนอกวรรณกรรมเพื่อให้สามารถถ่ายทอดความหมายได้อย่างถูกต้องและครบถ้วน

Abstract: This thesis’ objective was to study translation strategies of cultural terms in “Lai Chiwit”, a novel by M.R. Kukrit Pramoj, and its translated version “Many Lives”. The study results show that Thai culturally specific items found in the novel can be categorized according to Nida’s “Five Types of Sub-culture” (Nida, 1964) with items under the category of Material culture most frequently found. The smaller cultural categories, in terms of number, were Social culture, Religious culture, Ecological culture, and Linguistic culture in descending order. In terms of translation strategies, three strategies were used, namely: 1) Translation Techniques of Adjustment, 2) Literal translation, and 3) Transliteration. Furthermore, some historical events in Thai society influenced the novel and were also mentioned in the novel. Therefore, in addition to language skills, translators are required to have general knowledge such as a profound understanding of social and cultural contexts in order to convey the correct meaning in translation and maintain the author’s writing style.
