Abstract:
The aim of the study was to investigate the problems and solutions of using
consultation in LNG 103: Fundamental English III at King Mongkut's University of
Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), including the teachers' perception of counselling.
The subjects of this study were 10 teachers who taught LNG 103. They were equally separated into 2 groups: experienced and inexperienced teachers. The experienced teachers were the ones who had been teaching for more than 5 years, whereas the inexperienced ones were the teachers who had been teaching for less than 5 years. The subjects were interviewed separately based on questions which covered: teacher's opinions and attitudes towards consultation, ways to conduct consultation, contents and language used for counselling, teachers' roles in consultation, and problems during giving consultation. The findings of the study revealed that the teachers seem to understand the basic concepts of consultation. They had good attitudes towards giving consultation, and also realized advantages of counselling. Nevertheless, they thought that the results of consultation were not as effective as it should be. The teachers still had some problems in giving consultations, i.e. spending too much time on counselling, students' lack of attention for consultation, insufficient guidance for students before consultation, and teachers' lack of guidance on how to give consultation. The problems mentioned also may result from the main problem, i.e. lack of training for the teachers about how to give consultation.
Therefore, the solution for solving those problems was establishing the training course on how to give consultation to the teachers in KMUTT. The contents of this training course should cover in teacher-counsellors' roles, counselling skills, topic chosen for counselling, language proficiency, etc.
