Using a Checklist to Raise Language Awareness: a Case Study
Abstract:
This study aims at investigating whether the students' language awareness (LA) of tense use can be raised through the use of the checklist in writing task.
The subject of this study was one 2nd year graduated student studying in School of Energy and Materials at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi
(KMUTT). He is interested in practicing writing in order to improve his writing skills
by focusing on tense use. The research instruments used in this study were a checklist and the teacher's diaries. The results of the study showed that the subject's LA can be raised through the use of the checklist. The subject had abilities that refer to LA since the first time he used it. However, when he got used to or memorized the content of the checklist, LA still could be raised without using it. In this study, learner training and important factors like instrument design and individual differences should be considered when implementing new tasks. Learner training and those important factors are recommended for teachers
because they do not only prepare learners to be more independent, but also prepare effective tasks and instruments for them to use in their real situations.
