A Study of the University Students Motivation in Learning English at Private Schools in Yangon, Myanmar
Abstract:
This thesis entitled A Study of the University Students Motivation in
Learning English at Private Schools in Yangon, Myanmar comprises two objectives: 1)
to study the situation of University students learning English at private schools and
government Universities in Yangon, Myanmar, 2) to analyze the motivation patterns
of University students who are studying English at private schools in Yangon,
Myanmar. The research method for the study is both qualitative and quantitative
research. The population of the study is ninety University students who are studying
English at private schools, Royal Rose English Learning Center, All in One English class
and U Myat Kyaing English Learning Center, in Yangon Myanmar. Sixty University
students are selected as the samples for this research. Research tools for this study
are the questionnaires and open-ended interview. Frequency, percentage, mean, and
standard deviation and content analysis writing method are used for evaluation for
the findings of the results.
Findings of the study are as follows:
1. After analyzing the data collections, the results appeared that forty
respondents are female students and twenty respondents are male University
students. Most of them are attending the Government University and private schools.
Majority of the respondents are 21 to 24 years old. Levels of their study are

intermediate classes at private schools. Eighty six percent of the respondents attend
English private school with their own decision. With respect to the situation of
University students learning English at private schools and Government Universities, it
found that there are many reasons why University students are learning English at
private schools. Many respondents have problems in learning English in the State
Universities. They are: 1) traditional teaching methods 2) teacher-center method 3)
inadequate lecturers 4) overload students in the class rooms 5) incorrect educational
system 6) insufficient multimedia aid 7) class room atmosphere and 8) unqualified
teachers and so forth.
2. With regard to results of quantitative, the results revealed that almost of
the university students have two types of motivation which are instrumental and
integrative motivation. But, the level of instrumental motivation is higher than
integrative motivation. Results of the qualitative also came out that most of the
respondents keen on instrumental motivation that relates to future career in learning
English at private schools in Yangon, Myanmar. To cultivate the University students
motivation for learning English in the Government Universities, educational policy
makers and educationists need to amend curriculums, teaching methods and new
educational policy in the Government Universities. These points are very important
to consider for the educational transformation in Myanmar.
