Abstract:
This c1assroon1-based research study was conducted to find out the effects of e-mail recasting by the e-pals who were native speaker teachers of English 011 students' writing. It aimed to see whether the recasts have improved the efficiency of the students' ability to write English. Four students, who took LlVG 101 (Fundamental English I) in their first academic year 2003 at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi, were the subjects in this study. There were three research instruments used in this study including e-mail writings from both the students and the native speaker teachers, the students' record sheets, and the semi-structured interview. The findings of this study reveal that the recasts that the native speaker teachers made with the students had little effects on students' written accuracy. The students still made the same types of errors in their subsequent e-mails. The error type that the students made the most is grammar and the native speaker teachers also made most of their recasts on grammar too. However, the findings also reveal that the students were aware of some of their errors. They reported that they could learn some new words and slang/idioms, and could recognize their spelling errors. In addition, all 4 students also showed positive attitudes towards e-mail writing to the native speaker teachers.
