Effect of transition metal promoted on vanadium phosphorus oxide (VPO) catalysts in the partial oxidation of n-Pentane
Abstract:
Vanadium phosphorus oxide (VPO) catalysts were promoted with different
transition metals (M = Co, Bi, Fe, and Mn) for the partial oxidation of n-pentane to maleic
anhydride (MA) and phthalic anhydride (PA). The catalysts were prepared by precipitation
method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy
(SEM), N2-physisorption, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and X-ray photoelectron
spectroscopy (XPS). The catalytic performances were evaluated using a fixed bed reactor
with 1.7% n-pentane in air at 673 K and the liquid products were analyzed by a gas
chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). All the transition metal promoted VPO
exhibited higher conversion of n-pentane and higher selectivity of MA and PA than the
unpromoted one. The best catalytic performances were obtained over the Mn doped VPO
catalyst with 47.1% conversion of n-pentane at 3 h and selectivity of MA and PA 59.7%
and 23.2%, respectively. The improved catalyst performances were suggested to be due to
the small crystallite size and high specific surface areas of the modified VPO and the
decrease in vanadium oxidation state.
