Abstract:
The major problem in two-phase flow steam is erosion - corrosion at the outer radiusof piping. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to do internal pack carburizing toreduce erosion - corrosion.The wall thicknesses were measured during the service to obtain loss from thecurrent process by Radiographic and Ultrasonic Techniques. Three specimens weretested the corrosion rate within 99 days among original material (A106 Grade B),upgrade to low alloy (1 !A Cr - 0.5 Mo) and original material with internal packcarburizing.Results of this study indicate that internal pack carburizing at 850 "C and 10 hoursshowed 1-mm case depth and hardness increasing from 130 HV to 230 HV. Thecorrosion rates in each material were 2.60 mdyear of original material, 0.37 mdyearof low alloy material and 0.22 mrnlyear.This study can be conclude that time and temperature were mainly parameters ofinternal pack carburizing process control. Corrosion rate and cost of internal packcarburizing is cheaper than upgrade material to low alloy steel due to heat treatmentprocess. Anyway the lifetime of this study cannot predict in long term because internalpack carburizing can be immune or slower corrosion rate. The future study needs tofocus more on other internal hardening processes that can improve higher hardness.
