DEVELOPMENT OF A NON-FORMAL EDUCATION PROGRAM BASED ON THE CONCEPTS OF THE NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH AND NEO-HUMANIST TO ENHANCE MORAL INTELLIGENCE FOR AT-RISK JUVENILES
Abstract:
This quasi-experimental research aimed to: 1) study learning needs to enhance Moral Intelligence (MI) for at-risk juvenile; 2) develop non-formal education program based on the concepts of Noble Eightfold Path and Neo-humanist to enhance Moral Intelligence for at-risk juvenile; 3) study the relevant factors and conditions affecting the developed program; 4) study recommended policies and preventive measures to reduce violent problems caused by at-risk juvenile. The research was divided into 4 phases: 1) assessment of learning needs of 394 vocational students from 14 at-risk state and private institutions under Office of the Vocational Education Commission and Office of the Private Education Commission Supervision, Ministry of Education; 2) development of a non-formal education program based on learning needs; 3) program implementation was applied to 30 vocational students from an at-risk vocational institution, and analysis of data obtained from interviewing the experiment group and the facilitators for relevant factors and conditions affecting the developed program; 4) analysis of data obtained from interviewing seven experts for recommended policies and preventive measures to reduce violent problems caused by at-risk juvenile. The findings of the research were as follows: 1. The learning needs of at-risk juvenile to enhance Moral Intelligence were at high level and identified in 7 areas in the following orders: 1) fairness, 2) respect, 3) self-control, 4) tolerance, 5) conscience, 6) kindness, and 7) empathy. 2. There were eight components for the developed program: 1) objectives, 2) instructors, 3) learners, 4) content, 5) learning activities, 6) learning media, 7) measurement and evaluation, and 8) reflection. 3. After the experiment, the results showed the experimental group scored significantly higher than before the experiment at the significance level of 0.05 in knowledge and behaviors. In addition, six factors were included in the program implementation: 1) instructors, 2) learners, 3) content, 4) learning activities (Process of ParRRRa), 5) learning media, 6) learning atmosphere and classroom environment. Four conditions were: 1) learning period of time, 2) hands-on learning and practice, 3) learners motivation and inspiration, and 4) evaluation and reflection 4. Three recommended policies and thirteen preventive measures recommendations for the vocational institutions in Bangkok were: 1) Three policies: (1) treat at-risk juvenile with kindness, understanding, sincerity, and fairness; (2) manage violent crisis caused by at-risk juvenile with fairness (3) provide learning activities affecting violent reduction by concepts using of Moral Intelligence; 2) thirteen preventive measures, such as (1) promote Heroes of Teachers in institutes (2) promote committee with fairness to judge the cases caused by at-risk juvenile; (3) integrate Moral Intelligence in curriculum development.
