Preparation and properties of modified polystyrene and amino alcohol rubber blends
Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to prepare and study the thermal and mechanical
properties of maleic anhydride grafted polystyrene (MA-g-PS)/ amino alcohol rubber (AAR)
blends. These polymers were melt blended using a twin-screw extruder. The obtained
polymer blends were characterized by using FT-IR, 1H-NMR, DSC, TGA, tensile test, and
impact test. FT-IR spectra showed the amino group and hydroxyl group in the AAR structure
which indicated that the ENR reacted with ammonium hydroxide by ring opening reaction.
FTIR spectra also showed the C=O stretching of anhydride group in the structure of MA-g-
PS reacted to give ester and amide linkages in the MA-g-PS/AAR blends. TGA results
suggested that the MA-g-PS/AAR blends have higher thermal stability than neat PS, and the
thermal stability of MA-g-PS/AAR50 is higher than that of MA-g-PS/AAR25. In addition,
when the rubber content increased the thermal stability also increased. Furthermore, the
mechanical tests showed that MA-g-PS/AAR blends reduced the Youngs modulus and
tensile strength. However, the elongation at break and impact strength of the blend increased
with the amount of AAR content added.
