Abstract:
The primary objective of this work was to study the influence of a blowing agent on
physical and mechanical properties of Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) intended for shoe
soles. SBR compound was prepared using 20 part per hundred (phr) of silica and dinitroso
pentamethylene tetramine DPNT as a blowing agent with different mixing contents of 0, 2, 4,
6, and 8 phr. After the synthesized, the rubber composites were mixed by a two-roll mill, and
formed by a compression molding. The results showed that the cure characteristics; in term of
scorch time, curing time, torque difference, and density decreased with increasing blowing
agent content. It was found that, the rubber mixing with the 4 phr blowing agent showed a
superior tensile strength and strain at break. Moreover, a higher content of blowing agent
resulted in a decrease in the modulus at 100% strain. It was determined from the plastic
deformation of the original samples after compression that the lowest of deformation was
found in the 4 phr blowing agent sample.
